Описание к видео RIT Professor and Ceramic artist Peter Pincus on Sol Lewitt's legacy

This talk is part of a series of events centered around the ECSU gallery exhibition 'Cal Sol: The Enduring Legacy of Sol Lewitt.'

Here, Rochester-born artist and Professor Peter Pincus delves into the many influences that have shaped his artistic process. Pincus discusses the innovative courses he teaches at the Rochester Institute of Technology, highlighting the intertwining of his identity as both a teacher and an artist.

Pincus discusses his residency at the Birmingham Museum of Art, which culminated in the exhibition titled "Peter Pincus: Channeling Josiah Wedgwood." This exhibition explores how the 18th Century English potter Josiah Wedgwood influenced the patterns, colors, and forms within Pincus's work. It also led to the development of a course. Currently, Pincus is creating a new body of work and course centered around Sol Lewitt and his profound impact on the art-making process.

Pincus speaks about his artistic response to "Sol Lewitt: A Wall Drawing Retrospective," a collection of 105 wall drawings installed at Mass MoCA following Lewitt's instructions. He does this through his Many Few Project, a series of porcelain vases where Pincus establishes three rules to create intricate three-dimensional paintings out of vessels. Pincus examines his artwork Scratch Spin Amphora, a set of two porcelain amphoras featured in the ECSU exhibition demonstrating how the color is influenced by Lewitt, the shape of the amphora by Wedgwood's replicas of ancient Greek amphoras, and the pattern by a boot he studied during graduate school.

Lisa Casbon, artist and associate professor at Pratt University, adds her perspective on Sol Lewitt and the generosity of his artistic spirit., Casbon highlights the power of artistic influence; how looking at objects in a museum and feeling their power and meaning can move the artist. Casbon brings the example of currency in the Yap islands- large stone discs that measure up to four meters- and how its power can be channeled into new work.
