The more challenges you can throw at your garden designer, the better, honest. Working with multiple levels might sound like a headache, but in reality, it offers some of the richest opportunities for creating a truly unique space.

This project is a perfect example. We had no flat surface to work with, just a retaining wall followed by a sloping gradient. Rather than force it flat, we leaned into the natural topography and carved out a flowing path that draws you through the space. From there, we introduced a series of planting beds and borders, all sitting at different heights.

The result? A layered garden that’s bursting with character and packed with horticultural potential. Each tier provides a different environment, from shady corners to full sun pockets, allowing for a much wider variety of plants to flourish. Visually, it’s dynamic and full of texture, but it’s also incredibly practical and rooted in the natural landscape.

Designing with levels takes a bit more thought and planning, but the payoff is huge. These sorts of projects always become favourites. They’re a chance to be creative, responsive and just a bit daring.
