Neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease), Parkinson’s, and the most common types of dementia have proven to be extremely difficult to treat and are refractory to cures. However, new discoveries in the field of protein misfolding by research scientist and LLF alumna, Dr. Meredith Jackrel, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Department of Arts and Sciences, Washington University in St. Louis, are paving the way for a better understanding of the underlying pathologic mechanisms of these disorders.
