Lawsuit: SMUD gave energy data to police for cannabis grow searches

A new legal filing accuses the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) of sharing customer electricity usage data with the Sacramento Police Department to identify potential illegal cannabis grow-houses. The lawsuit, led by the Electronic Frontier Foundation on behalf of SMUD customers and the Asian American Liberation Network, alleges the utility provided law enforcement with data from more than 30,000 homes over a decade. Plaintiffs argue this constitutes unlawful surveillance and disproportionately impacts Asian American homeowners. A judge will hear the case in October. SMUD says it follows legal requirements when providing data.
