First IGMR satellite tagged spearfish in Mediterranean reveals interesting movements!

On July 15, 2015 IGFA Italian Representative Luca Bonfanti caught and tagged an estimated 15 kg (30 lb) Mediterranean spearfish which marked the first time Mediterranean spearfish were added to the IGFA Great Marlin Race and to our knowledge, the first time a satellite tag had been deployed in the species! Although the tag only stayed on the fish for a month, check out this movement track that shows the fish swimming south around Sardinia, before circling back to where it was tagged, and continuing north around the West side of Corsica before the tag popped off about 10 miles off the coast of Arenzano and Genoa, Italy.

The satellite tagging of these fish is revealing more data than we have ever known about their movements and their biological preferences. IGFA thanks all those who have the vision for supporting the IGFA Great Marlin Race and wanting to learn more about these amazing animals. Thank you.
