So this is part of pushing back, written around '83 when I made the effort to go to Big Mountain [at Four Corners - where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah meet] - and where the Navajo and Hopi were gathering to talk around a council fire.

When we arrived it was night, the fire was lit, and I promptly lay down beside it, feeling so warm and protected ~ wrapped in a blanket, I promptly fell asleep and was pretty shocked in the morning when I woke and realized that one wrong move, I would've fallen right into the flames. But everything was perfect, all was right. I was safe, and the weekend continued beautifully.

I went because I wanted to sing this song to the elders and get their permission to record it and dedicate it to the People (and their struggles). This they gave, and were very pleased. Later, a blind medicine woman spoke (she's just to the left of me in the picture/from your view, to the right) ... I noticed as she did that she'd draw circles in the dirt by the fire, letting it drift through her fingers occaisionally. She spoke of the importance of collecting herbs on the mountain, and it was mesmerizing. Her quiet, melodic voice ...

So, this is a song of protection, of awakening, a Giveaway. Please take it in and use its energy as you will. It's a blessing. xx
