{India Today Global } According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Ukraine has surpassed India to become the world’s largest arms importer for the 2020–24 period. Ukraine’s arms imports skyrocketed nearly 100-fold, primarily due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict that began in 2022. Meanwhile, India, which previously held the top position, saw a 9.3% reduction in its arms imports, largely driven by its growing capability to produce indigenous defense equipment. This shift reflects India's efforts to enhance self-reliance in defense production. As a result, India's share of global arms imports dropped from 9.8% (2019-23) to 8.3% (2020-24). This changing trend highlights the evolving dynamics in global arms trade, with a noticeable shift toward Western suppliers for India.
