Whenever a pope dies, this Prophecy of the Popes comes back to haunt us. But the pattern in unmistakable. Before 1590 the mottos line up with wild precision. Lucius II carries Inimicus expulsus “the enemy driven out,” a direct play on his family name Caccianemici. But details like that were readily available in Renaissance heraldry books.

After 1590 the clarity collapses. Clement X is stuck with Portio secunda “second portion,” which fits nothing in his life. Innocent XII is labelled Bellua insatiabilis “insatiable beast,” despite being famous for charity and stamping out nepotism.

Modern popes have a few nice hits though (if you ignore the counting sequence to get to them). Paul VI’s Flos florum “flower of flowers” matches the lilies on his shield and John Paul I’s De medietate lunae “from the half moon” coincides with his one-month reign, but the mental gymnastics start again with Benedict XVI’s Gloria olivae tied only to a remote Benedictine branch he never joined. Pope Francis gets shoe-horned into Petrus Romanus simply because the saint he was named after had a father named Pietro and had Italian roots…not very precise.

A couple of lucky hits are inevitable when you take 112 shots over nine centuries. It’s called the “Jeane Dixon effect.” Essentially, remember the coincidences, forget the blunders. It makes for interesting click-bait history, but nothing to sweat over.

Let me guess, I’m wrong because the papal portrait spaces are running out in the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls. 🤦‍♂️
