In this dynamic live demo, Khalid (Khal) Elsawaf, Lead Architect at Morgan Stanley, showcases how the FINOS CALM (Common Architecture Language Model) has simplified his day-to-day work by enabling architects to define and maintain complex system designs entirely through conversation with an LLM (Large Language Model).

🧠 CALM: Beyond C4 Diagrams
Cal explains that while he initially questioned the need for CALM over established models like C4, he was won over by three core features:

Controls: The ability to embed non-functional requirements (like security controls) directly into the architecture definition.

True Architecture as Code: The diagram is an artifact generated from the model, not the source of truth itself.

LLM Integration: Using conversational commands to create and modify the architecture model.

🎬 The Live Demo: Conversational Architecture
Cal demonstrates building a complex Order Placement System using only natural language prompts to interact with an LLM.

Building Nodes and Relationships: He instructs the LLM to create services (Order Placer, Order Router) and databases (MongoDB) as nodes, and establishes Connects relationships between them.

Scaling with LLMs: He uses a single instruction to repeat an entire "service and database" pattern multiple times, dramatically simplifying the process of scaling the architecture.

Visualization and Artifacts: The Visual Studio Code extension displays the architecture diagram in real-time. Critically, the model also automatically generates a Sequence Diagram and a Block Diagram representation of the Order Flow, demonstrating the "do things once and get multiple artifacts" benefit.

Metadata Management: The LLM manages all underlying metadata, including updating unique IDs in the model and all related relationships whenever a node is renamed.

SAD (Solution Architecture Description): Cal showcases a document generated entirely from the CALM model, using widgets to pull in the block diagram, tables of components, and flows directly from the single source of truth (the CALM JSON).

The takeaway: FINOS CALM, when paired with an LLM, fundamentally shifts the role of the architect by enabling the creation and maintenance of complex, auditable architecture without writing code. By automatically generating various diagrams (block, sequence) and documentation (SAD) from a single source of truth, CALM allows architects to achieve consistency, reduce errors, and raise multiple Pull Requests daily.
