Chickenbone John footstompers

Here's something that've been using for years...a simple foot stomping board that you can plug into a PA for a kick drum sound. We do them in two versions, plain box or with a license plate top - I prefer the ones with plate as they are more robust, and as the plate is silicone bonded as well as screwed to the top, it also helps suppress feedback, so it isn't just decorative.

They are thin enough to use either sitting down or stood up. I occasionally use a kick drum, but as I'm no drummer, I find it much easier just to tap my foot on one of these, especially as I haven't got a proper "heel-up" kick drum technique.

I put these straight into the PA, with the bass up and the treble down - this is recorded using just one Behringer 10" active speaker and a Mackie desk. You can also get good result using a bass guitar amp, but I don't recommend using a regular guitar amp as the general voicing of guitar amps tend to accentuate the naturally treble nature of the pickup. I've used this through PA rigs as simple as my own basic rig, which is a cheap 4 channel Behringer mixer and Behringer or Mackie 450 active speakers through to festival PA systems, in which case I just leave it to the sound engineer and I always seem to get decent results. I took one to a very wet Glastonbury where I was selling my guitars, and it survived 5 days of being almost submerged in wet mud. It got a little buzzy when water got inside it, but as soon as it was drained and dried out it was fine, so they are pretty durable too.
