4K 🇬🇧 Saint-Raphaël is a commune in the Var department, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Southeastern France. In 2017, it had a population of 35,042. Immediately to the west of Saint-Raphaël lies a larger and older town, Fréjus; together they form an urban agglomeration known as Var Estérel Méditerranée, which also encompasses the smaller communes of Les Adrets-de-l'Estérel, Puget-sur-Argens and Roquebrune-sur-Argens. In the second half of the 19th century, the township came under the influence of Mayor Felix Martin and writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr; owing to their efforts and its beneficial climate the commune developed into a seaside resort popular with artists, sportsmen and politicians.
It is the seat of the canton of Saint-Raphaël, also encompassing Fréjus and Les Adrets-de-l'Estérel, which is the economic and cultural centre of Eastern Var, within the arrondissement of Draguignan. Its inhabitants are called Raphaëlois in French generally, or Rafelencs in Provençal Occitan.

🇫🇷 Saint-Raphaël est une commune française située dans le département du Var, en région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. C’est le chef-lieu du canton de Saint-Raphaël, le siège de la communauté d'agglomération Var Estérel Méditerranée, une station balnéaire et climatique de la Côte d'Azur.
Des villas romaines sur la route de Forum Julii au village de pêcheurs où débarqua Napoléon Bonaparte en 1799, la commune devint à partir de la seconde moitié du xixe siècle, sous l’influence du maire Félix Martin et de l’écrivain Alphonse Karr, une station balnéaire prisée des artistes, sportifs et hommes politiques.
Appréciée pour ses roches rouges, ses criques et son Île d'Or, qui aurait inspiré Hergé pour son album des Aventures de Tintin L'Île Noire, elle est un site secondaire du Débarquement de Provence en 1944. Ville sportive et de congrès, Saint-Raphaël est aujourd’hui, avec la commune limitrophe de Fréjus, le pôle économique et culturel du sud-est varois. Ses habitants sont appelés les Raphaëlois.
