PAR 1 (GMD FP9), PAR 2 (GMD FP9), and GMTX 406 (EMD GP15-1) lead Pan Am WAAY, a rarely seen westbound freight, through North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and into Westford. The last time an F-unit led a freight train through this neck of the woods was over 37 years ago, back in the days of the Boston and Maine.
I'd heard about this train only two hours or so before it came through, and made the decision to skip my last class in order to catch it. Pan Am's F-units don't venture out of their home in Waterville, Maine, very often, and until today they'd never been used to haul freight, so I figured I'd regret missing out on this train. Sweetening the pot was GMTX 406; I spent a few hours chasing its cousin, GMTX 499, last week, unsuccessfully, and 406 offered me a shot at redemption.
District 2 referred to this train as "WAAY," as it originated in Waterville, Maine, and was bound for Ayer, Massachusetts. WAAY, for whatever reason, doesn't run much at all anymore, as it's been replaced by POED and POSE.
The contents of the four boxcars filling out the consist of the train, referred to by the dispatcher as "hot cars," are unknown.
I met some cool people chasing this train, one of whom knew the area and led me to the grade crossing at Depot St. in Westford. If you can read this, Al, thanks!
PAR 1's horn, for anyone interested, is a Nathan P5.
