Why Is Cyprus Independent? | The Greek and Turkish Cypriots

Описание к видео Why Is Cyprus Independent? | The Greek and Turkish Cypriots

Why is the island of Cyprus not a part of Greece or Turkey?
For millennia, Cyprus was inhabited solely by Greek-speakers, but in the 16th century it was conquered by the Turkish Ottoman Empire, and over the next few hundred years, thousands of Turks migrated there. By the late 20th century, both Greece and Turkey had their own ideas about what ought to happen on Cyprus, with the Greeks seeking "Enosis" or union, and the Turks, "Taksim" meaning division. Ultimately though, Cyprus became an independent state free from both countries in 1960, but it also ended up dividing anyway 14 years later.
