ODI DEŽEK / Come little rain

Translation:

Oh come little rain from that grey sky
into that dry earth
all the valleys all the hills
all is on fire.
Let the water get’s down
let the earth drink it
and goes deep down
every earth pore is waiting for you thirsty.
Let the leaves become green let the wheat grow
all forest becomes green all the valleys all the hills
they are waiting for you thirsty.
Oh come little rain!

This old chant comes from the region of Prekmurje and Međimurje and is a rain invocation. Women would walk around the dry field chanting and they would call the rain. I took the motives of the song that was found by Slovenian Ethno-musicologist Zmaga Kumar and is performed by Bogdana Herman, Slovenian singer. Zvezdana arranged the song and give the song new and prolonged lyrics in »Prekmurski« dialect, with the help of Irena Varga, Slovenian actress.
