Abstract: What happens when we feed wild birds in our gardens?
Although controversial in Australia, the practice of feeding wild birds in private gardens is extremely popular throughout large parts of the developed world. Around 38-75% of households in the UK and US feed birds regularly, and the participation rate is similar in Australia. In total, these people provide gigantic amounts of bird food, mostly seeds, to the birds that visit their gardens, leading to a global industry worth more that US$4 billion annually. Despite its scale, however, remarkably little is known about the implications of this practice. I have collated all the available information and have attempted to synthesise a big-picture of the many ecological, behavioural and social implications of all this supplementary food.


Professor Darryl Jones is an urban ecologist who has been exploring human-nature interactions, both positive and negative, for many years. He has been engaged in studying wild bird feeding for over a decade and recently published The Birds At My Table (2018, Cornell Uiv Press).
