Описание к видео Canola School: Turning historical pressure into future blackleg protection

Blackleg remains one of the most significant disease challenges facing canola growers across the Prairies, with its potential to cut into yield if left unchecked. In this episode of Canola School, Lori Yarnell, technical marketing manager with BASF, joins RealAgriculture’s Amber Bell to dig into what blackleg looks like, when it causes the most damage, and the management tools available to farmers.

Yarnell explains that blackleg typically infects canola very early in the season, at the cotyledon to two-leaf stage. “By the time you’re seeing symptoms…you don’t really have a lot of management options,” she says, emphasizing the importance of assessing historical pressure. Cutting stems at swath timing and checking for black or brown discoloration is one of the best ways to understand disease risk for the following season.

Moisture, humidity, and plant wounds from flea beetles or wind-blown soil can all increase infection risk, making an integrated approach to management essential, Yarnell says. Resistant hybrids, such as those rated “R” for blackleg, provide a foundation of protection. Extending crop rotations to at least one in three years, along with the use of fungicides like Nexicor, can further reduce disease pressure.

While blackleg incidence has been rising in recent years, Yarnell says growers should take heart: “A lot of canola companies, BASF definitely included…are continuing to work on the genetic side, to have that under control, as well as the fungicide aspect.” With continued research and on-farm vigilance, blackleg can be effectively managed to protect yield potential.
