Pablo Larraín discusses his career and his latest film Spencer.

We are delighted to welcome Oscar-nominated writer and director Pablo Larraín back to the BFI London Film Festival to discuss Spencer, his powerful portrait of Princess Diana, alongside his celebrated career.

In 2008, Larraín made a splash at festivals, including Cannes and the LFF, with Tony Manero, the story of a Chilean serial killer obsessed with Saturday Night Fever. It was the first of the filmmaker's riveting trilogy of dramas focusing on focused on Pinochet-era Chile, alongside Post Mortem and No. The latter film was universally acclaimed by critics and eventually nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2012 Academy Awards. He then directed and co-wrote the brilliant and scathing The Club, a singular drama focusing on life in a remote Chilean residence housing disgraced priests and nuns.

Larraín directed two unique biopics in 2016 – the Golden Globe-nominated Neruda and his English-language debut Jackie, a portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy in the aftermath of her husband's assassination, tarrwed Natalie Portman. The film was one of the major awards season contenders, eventually winning two BAFTAs for Best Actress and Best Original Music, as well as being nominated for in the Best Actress, Best Costume Design and Best Score categories at the Academy Awards. In 2019, Larraín reunited with his No and Neruda star García Bernal for Ema, an explosive, genre-defying drama about a flame-throwing Reggaton dancer. And in 2020 and 2021 he turned his attention to television work, directing an episode of Netflix's Covid webseries Homemade, as well as Stephen King adaptation Lisey's Story for Apple TV+.

The Screen Talk programme is supported by The Liberation Initiatives.
