Historian Adam Busiakiewicz made this astonishing discovery through a social media post. Busiakiewicz, a consultant for Sotheby’s auction house, shared his findings on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the lost painting was found in an unexpected place.
According to Busiakiewicz, the portrait in question was painted by Warwickshire artist Ralph Sheldon in the 1590s, who was commissioned to create 22 portraits of significant figures. The painting matches the description of the lost Henry portrait, featuring the same arched top and frame as surviving examples.
The historian pointed out that an engraving of the Weston House frieze also depicts the same composition for Henry, further supporting the portrait's authenticity. This discovery is especially notable given that many of these works were believed to have been dispersed in 1781.
