Saving Georgia’s Amphibians and Building Career Bridges for Biologists through Conservation Research

Learn about conservation of native Georgia amphibians and how you can join local efforts to preserve imperiled native species. Gopher Frogs, Frosted Flatwoods Salamanders, and Striped Newts are Georgia natives that share environmental and ecological problems in coastal plain habitats. They also are united by the fact that an Atlanta-based conservation organization, the Amphibian Foundation, is working with state and federal agencies to save them from extinction. Find out how you can support this mission, help local urban ecology initiatives and hear about the exciting new Conservation Research Bridge Program that gives adults the hands-on research experience and mentoring they need to become biologists! This unique career development program offers opportunities to work with rare and endangered species as well as local favorites in a custom designed curriculum to help students develop their passion, learn lab and field techniques, and transition into the world of conservation biology research, education and outreach. The talk will feature information on the team’s ongoing work headstarting and releasing Gopher Frogs and new projects created during the COVID crisis to work locally to clean up litter and survey reptiles and amphibians in the Mill Creek at the Blue Heron Nature Preserve. You’ll see charismatic Snapping Turtles and learn how to help protect them. There will be plenty of time to discuss your favorite reptiles and amphibians, ask questions about the new bridge program, and learn how you can support conservation in Georgia.

Dr. Tobias Landberg is the Director of Research at the Amphibian Foundation and the Director of the Conservation Research Bridge Program. He loves learning about and sharing a passion for conservation biology of amphibians and reptiles. He has a non-traditional academic background and started the bridge program this year to help increase the opportunity for people from diverse backgrounds to enter the field and get the kinds of experiences that transformed him from an animal lover into a biologist. A native of Denmark, he grew up in Texas and Massachusetts. After leaving the American highschool system he worked many different jobs including a foam factory, the restaurant industry, and restoring old homes doing carpentry and painting. Trained as a functional morphologist earned his undergraduate and Master’s degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst studying how salamanders and turtles perform essential behaviors like breathing and locomotion. He earned his PhD from the University of Connecticut studying the evolution of how amphibians respond to different environments. He continued this work as a Post-doctoral Fellow at Boston College and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama as well as at Murray State University in western Kentucky. He was a professor of biology in Philadelphia before coming to Georgia to join the Amphibian Foundation and start the Conservation Research Bridge Program this past December.
