The beginning of November saw the One North East alliance taking shape, though its final structure and name are yet to be announced. The initiative is being led by several regional leaders, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Pradyot Deb Barma of TIPRA Motha. For Tripura, Pradyot’s involvement is significant because he remains the only leader who has managed to slow the BJP’s rise in the state. His party has one MP and 12 MLAs, yet he continues to struggle for meaningful space in state politics.

One of the biggest concerns for Pradyot and TIPRA is the lack of progress after the Tiprasa Accord. Despite being in alliance with the BJP, TIPRA has found that many of its efforts have stalled. A key example is the long list of Bills passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) that are still awaiting the Governor’s assent. Thirty-seven Bills remain pending, including several on tribal customary laws and land. Pradyot has argued that withholding these Bills without a timeline limits the powers of the Council. He has also referred to a recent Supreme Court judgment stressing that Governors must act on Bills within a reasonable period.

Tripura also faces long-standing concerns over migration. Tribal communities, once the majority, are now less than one-third of the population. Bengali speakers form the majority and hold most Assembly seats despite living on less than one-third of the state’s land. Pradyot has raised the need for stronger land rights and safeguards, arguing that the state cannot ignore demographic changes.

Through the One North East alliance, he hopes to build wider support so that the concerns of Tripura’s indigenous people receive attention at the national level.
