As Earth’s data demands strain power, cooling, and environmental limits, tech companies are looking to space for solutions. Florida-based Lonestar Data Holdings is building the Freedom Data Center, set to be the first on the Moon, offering off-world disaster recovery and archival storage. Launching via SpaceX and Intuitive Machines, the solar-powered system will store critical data for clients like the State of Florida, the Isle of Man government, AI firm Valkyrie, and Imagine Dragons, leveraging extreme lunar conditions for cooling and security. Lonestar has already proven off-world storage viability through ISS experiments in 2021–2022. Meanwhile, Axiom Space and Red Hat plan to launch AxDCU-1, an orbital prototype data center, to the ISS in spring 2025. Running Red Hat’s Device Edge platform, it will test AI, cloud processing, and cybersecurity in space, aiming to process data closer to its source and lay the groundwork for future orbital computing networks. While both projects face challenges like radiation, maintenance difficulties, and high costs, they share the goal of safeguarding data from Earth-based threats, signaling that space-based data infrastructure is moving from concept to reality.
