In the illustrious kingdom ruled by the wise and adventurous King Vikramaditya from his capital in Ujjain, captivating stories unfolded under the moonlit sky. Witty and enchanting, the ghost Betaal shared these tales with the learned monarch. King Vikramaditya, known for his bravery, fearlessness, and unwavering will, welcomed a multitude of visitors daily, graciously accepting their gifts.

Among the many guests was a humble mendicant who consistently presented the king with fruits. Intriguingly, one day, a seemingly ordinary fruit revealed a hidden treasure—a splendid ruby. Astonished by this discovery, the king ordered an examination of all the fruits, each yielding a precious ruby. Eager to understand the mystery, King Vikramaditya sought to meet the mendicant.

The mendicant, however, set a unique condition: the king must meet him under a Banyan tree at the heart of the cremation ground, outside the city, on the 14th night of the dark half of the month. True to his adventurous spirit, the king agreed and met the mendicant as agreed upon.

Under the Banyan tree, the mendicant revealed a task suited for a king of Vikramaditya's stature. The king was to journey to the northernmost corner of the cremation ground, where an ancient tree stood with a corpse hanging from one of its branches. This specific corpse held the key to certain occult powers sought by the mendicant. To attain these powers, the king needed to bring the corpse to the mendicant and allow him to perform specific rites upon it.

Legend had it that King Vikramaditya, bound by a vow, had to silently carry the corpse of Betaal from a treetop to another location. During this eerie journey, Betaal's spirit within the corpse narrated captivating stories to the king. Upon completing each story, Betaal posed a question to the king. If the king failed to answer, he risked breaking his vow, and Betaal would return to the treetop, leaving the king short of his destination. The cycle would then repeat, challenging the king anew.

Named 'Betaal Pachisi,' signifying the twenty-five stories shared by Betaal, this intriguing series of tales became a testament to King Vikramaditya's resilience and intellectual prowess in the face of supernatural challenges.
