Pionnière dans la mise en lumière de la première génération de graffeurs new-yorkais, la Galerie Speerstra a joué un rôle déterminant dans l'évolution du mouvement artistique urbain. Depuis 1991, elle est une partenaire privilégiée de JonOne, collaborant étroitement avec l'artiste pour présenter son travail et explorer de nouveaux territoires d'expression.

Beats and Rhymes nous plonge au cœur de la puissance brute et du dynamisme créatif de JonOne. Nous remontons à ses sources d’inspiration, à l'époque où le métro de New York servait de toile à ses créations. Comme si l'on avait extrait des pans de wagon, les œuvres présentées sont réalisées sur aluminium, achevées avec une finition vernis de carrosserie, et se déploient tels des fragments captivants, immortalisant un moment pivot de son œuvre. Le foisonnement d’énergie, ce kaléidoscope de couleurs, la contestation des normes établies, reflètent l'audace et l'insoumission inhérentes au mouvement graffiti dans les années 80.

A pioneer in highlighting the first generation of New York graffiti artists, the Speerstra Gallery has played a decisive role in the evolution of the urban artistic movement. Since 1991, it has been a privileged partner of JonOne, collaborating closely with the artist to present his work and explore new territories of expression.

“Beats and Rhymes” plunges us into the heart of JonOne's raw power and creative dynamism. We go back to his sources of inspiration, to the days when the New York subway was the canvas for his creations. As if sections of a railcar had been extracted, the presented works are made on aluminum, finished with a car body varnish, and unfold like captivating fragments, immortalizing a pivotal moment in his work. The abundance of energy, the kaleidoscope of colors and the challenge to established norms reflect the boldness and insubordination inherent in the graffiti movement of the 80s.
