Описание к видео For Your Consideration: Solaris (2002) Was a Great Movie | The Common Hatred

Steven Soderbergh's 2002 movie Solaris is a film I've usually seen get dismissed at best and trashed at worst. Does it deserve that treatment?

While I was working on my Anthem video in 2019, I slowly realized that I really enjoyed the creative process of presenting my ideas in a video essay format. My initial thinking was that I wanted to make a short video talking about how poorly-advertised Solaris (2002) was, culminating in the presentation of a trailer I made myself to demonstrate a truthful trailer vs. the deliberately misleading one we got. But the more I thought about it, the more I decided that I had a lot more to say than "trailer bad", and ultimately the poor marketing is a footnote in this video. I love this movie, and I've long felt that people would've been more willing to enjoy it had it been marketed differently and, perhaps, had it not attempted to present itself as having any ties to the Stanisław Lem novel or the Andrei Tarkovsky film based on it. This essay is my attempt to get you to consider the film on its own merits. I hope I've been successful.

Words censored to avoid angering the algorithm. Solaris includes an oblique mention of ab_rtion, but never says the word itself. S_icide and the urge to commit it are large plot points, and two [both bloodless but one a little graphic regardless] are depicted onscreen. I don't shy away from using the word in the video or discussing it. Please consider your own comfort zone when viewing this video.
