The Bisti De-Na-Zin Wilderness in remote northwestern New Mexico is every bit as bizarre as it's name sounds. When I arrived, another man was leaving, muttering that it was "too scary." Rocks here look like alien eggs. Hoodoos tower over a barren badland like giant watchmen in the night. Backpacking or hiking deep into this wilderness like I did, where nobody ever goes, is not for the ill-prepared. This place will eat you if you are not ready for it. But it will also take your breath away with its strange beauty.
