Why not go with tarp and lava rock.
Level the area with a flat head shovel, make sure the dirt line and planned lava rock applied on top is not going to be above the slab foundation, unless you like water ingress and termites. Use cloth tarp, folded over for a double layer for a ground covering. Finally, add a generous amount of lava rocks. A bag does not go far, so read the coverage area printed on the bag's label. This process is more expense and labor intensive for year one, but never again buy mulch.
Divide an conquer- not all the beds have to be done at once.
If you have leaves fall upon the rock, a blower on low speed and/or a leaf vac works wonders.
