NEST (National Entrance Screening Test) is a national-level entrance examination conducted in India for admission to the 5-year Integrated MSc programme in basic sciences.

It is mainly for admission into:
• NISER, Bhubaneswar (National Institute of Science Education and Research)
• UM–DAE CEBS, Mumbai (Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences)

The exam is meant for students who are interested in pursuing careers in pure sciences and research fields like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and interdisciplinary sciences.

NEST is conducted once every year, usually after Class 12 exams. Students who have passed or are appearing in Class 12 with Science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics/Biology) are eligible to apply.

The question paper is completely objective type (MCQs) and computer-based.
The exam consists of:
• Physics
• Chemistry
• Mathematics
• Biology
• A general section

Out of the four main subjects (PCM + Biology), the best three sections are considered for scoring, along with the general section. This helps students who are stronger in certain subjects.

The syllabus is based mainly on:
• NCERT Class 11 and 12
• Topics similar to JEE and NEET level

After qualifying NEST:
• Students get admission into prestigious research institutes
• They receive a monthly scholarship
• They get strong exposure to scientific research
• Career options open in research, teaching, ISRO, DRDO, CSIR, IITs, IISc, and abroad for higher studies
