Along the way, he delves into the spiritual dimensions of mountaineering and draws out the implications of sacred mountains for environmental and cultural preservation based on his work with National Parks and World Heritage Sites.

Edwin Bernbaum is an author, lecturer, and scholar of comparative religion and mythology, working on the relationship between culture and the environment. His book won the Commonwealth Club’s Gold Medal for Non-Fiction and was the basis of a photographic exhibit of his at the Smithsonian Institution and the American Museum of Natural History.

He has lectured widely to audiences such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Geographic Society.

Formerly Director of the Sacred Mountains Program at The Mountain Institute, he is co-chair of the IUCN Specialist Group on the Cultural and Spiritual Values of Protected Areas (CSVPA) working on integrating the cultural and spiritual significance of nature into the management and governance of protected areas around the world.

A past President of the Harvard Mountaineering Club and instructor at the Colorado Outward Bound School, he has climbed and done research in mountains throughout the world.
