On April 21, 2003, a day before her 17th birthday, Amanda accepts a ride from her friend's dad after her work shift ends, not knowing this decision would cost her freedom for the next 10 years. Between 2002 and 2004, the neighbourhood bus driver, Ariel Castro, kidnapped three of his daughter’s friends: Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Georgina ‘Gina’ DeJesus. Amanda and the girls are chained and tortured in the Cleveland House of Horrors, blocks away from her own mother, up until her young daughter born in captivity dares to ask a question that would ultimately lead to their escape, and end their decade-long nightmare.
