Die Fachrichtung Fotografie der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig organisiert begleitend zum 7. Festival für Fotografie f/stop ein Symposium, in dem die Diskussion um die Deutung und Bedeutung der in Medien zirkulierenden Bilder im Vordergrund steht.

Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage, wie medial verbreitete Bilder unsere Wirklichkeit konstituieren und wie man den ihnen zugrunde liegenden Politiken auf die Spur kommen kann. Es sind insbesondere die Mechanismen der Verbreitung und der daran anschließenden Wirkung, die in diesem Zusammenhang zentral sind.

In den Vorträgen werden verschiedene theoretische und künstlerische Positionen zu den Wegen, die Bilder nehmen, und den Botschaften, die sie vermeintlich vermitteln, präsentiert. Hier richtet sich das Interesse auf die Distribution von Bildern durch unterschiedliche Kanäle der sozialen Medien, Internetportale, Presse, Printmedien oder Agenturen sowie Fragen nach der Funktion und Wirkung der Bilder.

Die eingeladenen Referentinnen und Referenten blicken aus verschiedenen Perspektiven auf die Bilder jener politischen Ereignisse, mit denen wir uns momentan konfrontiert sehen: Bilder von bewaffneten Konflikten, Krisensituationen, Flucht und Migration. Was ist auf den Bildern, die uns permanent in großer Vielzahl und Vielfalt erreichen, wirklich zu sehen? Was verschleiern sie in ihrem Überfluss? Wie werden Geschichte und Geschichten konstruiert? Was wollen die Bilder von uns als Betrachterinnen und Betrachter? Was sprechen sie in uns an?

Accompanying the 7th f/stop Festival of Photography, the Department of Photography of the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig presents a symposium on the topic of the interpretation and impact of images in contemporary patterns of production and circulation.

The starting point is the question in which way images distributed through media shape our sense of reality and how we can approach the underlying politics. Of particular interest in these discussions are both the mechanisms of distribution and the corresponding agency and impact of images.

Throughout the talks, a range of different theoretical and artistic positions presents their perspective on the trajectories of images and the narratives they supposedly invoke. Here, the symposium focuses on the distribution of images through different channels of social media, Internet platforms, press, print media or press agencies as well as questions concerning the function and properties of images to communicate and affect.

The invited speakers offer different perspectives on the imagery surrounding those political events, which are omnipresent today – be it armed conflicts, crisis situations or migration. What can really be seen in that multiplicity of images, circulating incessantly, competing for our attention? What is obscured through their sheer abundance and often short-lived presence? How are history and stories constructed? What do these images want from us spectators? To whom do they appeal and how?
