The Battle of Polytopia is a turn-based strategy game played on a procedurally generated square grid, where you balance long-term economic growth, with building a robust army. Each turn, you earn a number of stars depending on how developed your empire is. Stars are spent to expand cities, recruit troops, or unlock technologies, and any unused resources carry over to the next turn. Larger cities support more units, and a wide range of troop types provide different movement and combat capabilities.

The main mode limits games to 30 rounds, with the goal of achieving the highest score rather than total victory. Success comes from balancing when to invest in your economy with when to strengthen your army, and how to respond to rivals. The base game features 12 playable tribes, each with different initial technologies unlocked, and games are highly customizable with variable map sizes and up to all 12 tribes in one game. Once familiar with the mechanics, a match against multiple AI opponents can be wrapped up in under an hour, but it also has a smooth "leave and re-join" mechanic.


Multiplayer is available in both live matches and asynchronous games, with up to 24 hours allowed per turn. A local “pass and play” mode is also included, for multiplayer on the same device.

The tutorial however is minimal, leaving new players to figure out systems on their own, while the combat calculations are also needlessly intricate for this type of game. Additionally, while tribes feel distinct early on, their differences fade by the late game. The interface could also be more helpful, and the visual clutter makes it easy to miss key opponent moves.


Overall, Polytopia is a strategy game with depth, but while the number-crunching aspects can feel a little tiresome, you can pick up the basics quickly, and it remains rewarding and surprisingly fun to enjoy casually.
