7 out of 11 African vulture species are at risk of extinction! 🦅💔 All of them are listed as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. While this is heartbreaking for the species themselves, what many people don’t realize is how much we can lose alongside them.

According to BirdLife International, the 🌱 ecosystem services vultures provide in Southern Africa alone are valued at an estimated US $1.8 billion per year. By feeding on rotting carcasses, vultures prevent the spread of deadly diseases, help control pests, and improve sanitation. Their role is crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems and for protecting human health.

Despite their importance, vulture populations have plummeted by 97% (Birdlife International) due to a range of human-caused threats, including poisoning, electrocution, and collisions with power lines.

Today, on International Vulture Awareness Day, let's remember the crucial part these birds play and do our part to save nature’s clean up crew, because protecting nature protects us all❗
