Law and Mental Health: Towards Strength Based Forensic Assessment: Utilizing Protective Factors in Violence Risk Assessment and Management -Simone Viljoen, Ph.D.

Simone Viljoen Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist working in private practice specializing in forensic psychology. She is also a co-founder and clinical co-director of the Second Judicial Court Clinic Pilot Project. Her professional work has included delivery of training and workshops in law and mental health-related topics to various agencies. Dr. Viljoen is also affiliated with the University of New Mexico, where she is an adjunct instructor in the psychology department and a clinical assistant professor in the psychiatry department. In these roles, she supervises the clinical work of post-doctoral students and teaches undergraduate courses in Introduction to Forensic Psychology and Alcohol Use Disorders. She has co-authored a book chapter and several publications related to violence risk assessment and management, in particular, the use of protective factors in these assessments; gender issues in forensic psychology; and diagnostic issues in personality disorder. She has also presented over 45 conference presentations on topics related to mental health and psychology and the law.
