The East Coast Museum of Technology is a little-known gem, with a large collection of historical artefacts on-site. They're located at Makaraka; around five kilometres north-west of Gisborne.

It's all run by volunteers, and their collection includes old buildings, home appliances, cars, fire engines and even some railway items (amongst many other exhibits). One of the locomotives is DSA 222; a 70 year-old diesel shunter built for New Zealand Railways by the Drewry Car Company.

The museum itself is located on the former Moutohora Branch (opened in 1917; closed in 1959). Sadly, no train rides are offered here. Despite that fact, I still enjoyed my time at ECMOT, and I highly recommend checking it out for yourself if you're in the Gisborne area.
