Colcha Embroidery | From the Vault at the Albuquerque Museum

For centuries, needle workers in New Mexico have decorated plain woven cloth with a special embroidery technique. Locally called “colcha embroidery” because it was often used to decorate bedspreads or “colchas” in Spanish, the traditional designs can be traced back to Mexico, Europe, and Asia. In more recent times, embroiderers have broadened the range of designs and even occasionally tell stories in pictures.
