🌍 Distribution & Habitat

Found across India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and parts of Sri Lanka.

Can adapt to a variety of environments — from dry scrublands to rainforests.

Often seen basking near water bodies, as they are excellent swimmers 🏞️.

🐍 Physical Description

Size: Typically 2.5 – 4 meters, but can reach over 6 meters in rare cases.

Weight: Up to 90 kg for large adults.

Color: Pale brown, yellowish, or whitish base with dark brown blotches forming an irregular pattern — excellent camouflage among rocks and leaf litter.

Head: Broad with a distinctive dark stripe running from the eyes to the jaw.

Scales: Smooth and glossy.

📝 The Indian rock python is closely related to the Burmese python (Python bivittatus), which is slightly larger and found more in Southeast Asia.

🌿 Behavior & Ecology

Non-venomous constrictor — kills prey by wrapping around it and suffocating it with powerful muscles.

Feeds on birds, mammals (like deer, rodents, monkeys), and sometimes livestock.

Ambush predator — waits patiently for prey to come close.

Mostly nocturnal, but also basks in the sun during the day.

Females lay 30–100 eggs, and uniquely among snakes, they coil around their eggs to incubate them by shivering to generate heat 🥚🔥.

⚠️ Human Interaction

Generally shy and non-aggressive toward humans, but will defend itself if provoked.

Sometimes hunted for skin or captured illegally for the pet trade, which threatens populations.

Protected under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act (1972) — highest protection level.
