In this video I interview Professor David S. Powers from Cornell University. Professor Powers received his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from Princeton University in 1979 and is a distinguished scholar focusing on Islamic law and early Islamic history. In this interview we discuss some recent work he has done on the figure of Zayd, the adopted son of Muhammad and the first husband of one of Muhammad's most famous wives, Zaynab. In this video we discuss the biography of Zayd according to the earliest sources and delve into how early Muslims understood Zayd and his relationship to Muhammad. We also discuss the controversial scene between Muhammad and Zaynab according to the earliest sources and its use in medieval polemics.
