Around midday, the “Canada First Rally” drew a group of protesters to Christie Pits Park, where organizers promoted the message: “Stop mass immigration. Start mass deportations. Remigration is necessary.”

Their arrival, however, was met by a much larger crowd of counter-demonstrators supporting immigration, who responded with chants of, “You will never get your way. Immigrants are here to stay.”

When anti-immigration protesters entered the park, the two sides quickly confronted one another.

Ward 11 Councillor Dianne Saxe, who had earlier labeled the gathering a “hate demonstration,” voiced strong opposition: “This rally does not represent what we stand for as a city or as Canadians.”

She further criticized the choice of location, noting, “I am also appalled at the absurdity of these individuals choosing Christie Pits Park, with its history of standing against hate.”

According to her statement, the counter-protests demonstrated that “spirit of opposition to nativism, jingoism and racism remains a vibrant part of our ward.”

Saxe, who joined the counter-protesters, reaffirmed: “This is our home, and in Toronto, this is how we stand up for those wishing to spread division and hate.”
