Teachers are bombarded with ideas about how to improve education, many of which claim to be ‘research-based’ but the fact that something improves achievement tells us little until we know by how much, at what cost, and whether it could be implemented at scale. In this talk, Dylan Wiliam will show that when we look at costs, benefits, and practicability, two things—a knowledge-rich curriculum and improving teachers’ pedagogical skill—are likely to have most impact on student achievement. He will also outline how schools can focus on these activities, thus maximizing the impact of improvement efforts on student achievement.
