We take a look at real data from 2017 to 2020 to see what actually happened in the stock market during a period of heightened tariffs. While many assume that tariffs lead to a market downturn, the numbers tell a more interesting story.

Using a four-year comparison, we examine how different markets performed. Surprisingly, both the U.S. and Chinese stock markets outperformed other developed economies, despite ongoing tariff disputes. If you had invested in the U.S. market during this period, your dollar would have grown significantly, and if you had invested in China, it would have doubled. Meanwhile, other developed markets—excluding the U.S.—saw more modest gains. This challenges the idea that tariffs alone determine stock performance.
