FLYSHIP 80 uses a peculiarity of the physics: the almost weightless hovering - like an Albatross, over the water, . The revolutionizing realization of the concept to a transportation will change the passenger traffic between the coasts of the Mediterranean, from north or Baltic sea, the Caribbean the red sea and other big waters.
Because on basis of the guidelines of the IMO (International MaritimeOrganization), and the MSC, Maritime Safety Committee, the FLYSHIP80 is regarded as a ship. The first FLYSHIP 80 probably enters operation in 2011 for distances between 150 km and approximately 800 km in order to transport up to 80 passengers between the coasts of inner seas and selected big inner waters.
Under leadership of the engineer Dr.-Ing. Ulf-Dieter Ulken, who is well experienced in shipbuilding and financed through private investors, FLYSHIP 80 converts an idea as license taker of secured patents that were developed worked out and approved for more than 30 years. This idea of a transportation, that uses the so-called ground effect, needs only approximately two third of the energy, that is necessary for flying in higher regions.
Dr. Ing. Ulf-Dieter Ulken made his passion - flying and shipping - to his occupation. Already in 1981, he received his private pilot license and began to study aircraft engineering 1982 at the technical University in Braunschweig. 1985 Dr. Ulken shifted to the technical university Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) which was newly established at that time, and continued his study in ship mechanical engineering.
Hanno Fischer, former technical director of RFB (Rhein Flugzeugbau), is the inventor of the Hoverwing principle which is taken as a basis for the production of FLYSHIP 80.
Hanno Fischer designs his colourful "Airfish" as a result and advanced it with several models. His newest throw is the "Hoverwing 2VT", a vehicle that is, thanks to a refined starting system, the most modern WIG in the world. With this new design the contact with the water is reduced as far as possible. The propeller is mounted on a pylon with a door that can be opened and closed. A small part of the propeller stream is caught with it. Through two skirts, one at the bow and one at the stern, an air cushion is created under the hull. It lightens the vehicle about round 80 percent.
Hanno Fischer has licensed his patents to FLYSHIP 80 and therefore allows the conversion of the best WIG-concept and the realization of a revolutionary passenger transportation system.
The ground effect allows an extraordinarily economic as well as thrifty flight with considerably lower fuel consumption as in free flight. The ground effect frequently was used already during the Second World War by pilots returning home, if they had only little fuel left. They flew back very close above the ground.
The ground effect is an especially economic and ecological possibility of swift and comfortable locomotion. However, special construction characteristics are necessary in order to solve the physical problems which threaten the utilization of the ground effect. The problem is that the balance point of lift in free flight is located relatively far in front of the wing. It lies approximately within 1/3 of the so-called cord length. With maximum ground effect, however, this moves backwards to the centre of area located approximately 1/2 of the cord length.
