Originally published March 7, 2013

The standoff in Sabah has spiraled from a firefight between Malaysian security forces and followers of the sultan of Sulu who landed in the village of Tanduao, Lahad Datu town, since February 9, into a war. At least 1,000 militants from Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi were reported to sail to Sabah to reinforce members after the Malaysian forces unleashed air strikes and mortar attacks on nearly 200 Filipinos occupying the village on Tuesday. The latest assault on the village in Lahad Datu, has so far killed 27 people, including 19 gunmen and 8 Malaysian police officers.
The lengthy standoff first turned into violence in Tanduo that left 12 of the Filipinos and two Malaysian forces dead on March 1st. Another gun battle took place on March 2nd in the town of Semporna, killed 6 gunmen and two police officers. More militants were poised to land in Sabah to fight for the cause.
Reuters reported that the group is demanding recognition and an increased payment from Malaysia for their claim as the rightful owners of Sabah, part of Borneo island and which the sultanate leased to British colonialists in the 19th century.
