This is for my non-Bhutanese viewers (Hira, especially if you’re reading this):

Tsechu is a religious festival celebrated in Bhutan, and each Dzongkhag (district) has its own unique celebrations. I have been to the Thimphu and Paro Tsechu; most of the performances feature mask dances. There is also Domchoe, which is performed a few days prior to Tsechu and is considered more sacred. The Tsechu is celebrated over three days: the first day features Zhana Cham, the second day is dedicated to Bardo, and the third day celebrates Guru Rinpoche Chams (Guru Rinpoche is considered the second Buddha in Bhutan).

Here’s a brief description of the second day of Tsechu: "Bardo" refers to the transitional state between death and rebirth, according to Tibetan Buddhism. The dance emphasizes the importance of guiding souls during this period, reminding the audience of the cycle of life and the need for mindfulness. The masks worn by dancers are highly detailed and often depict various deities, animals, or spirits. These masks embody the characteristics of the figures they represent, conveying deep spiritual significance. The performance aims to invoke blessings for the audience, as well as for the deceased, ensuring peace and favorable rebirth.

Here’s a link to the description of different chams if you’re interested. I have witnessed Tsechu many times as a child, and it was always a scorching sun and sweaty experience, but luckily this year it wasn’t very sunny. I am so happy that I was able to spend time with my parents. Hope you enjoy the video. Thank you
