What is Shabbat? Seven Reasons You Need It - For Beginners

Описание к видео What is Shabbat? Seven Reasons You Need It - For Beginners

What is Shabbat? Where does it come from, and why do we need it? I'll answer these questions in this video.

Shabbat is the Hebrew word for the weekly day of rest. The English word "sabbath" comes from this word, and you might also hear it pronounced or see it spelled as "shabbos" or "shabbes" (from the Ashkenazic or Yiddish derivation of the Hebrew).

Shabbat is one of the longest-standing Jewish traditions, and it comes from the very beginning of our story: In the beginning of the Torah (part of the Jewish Bible), God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. "God blessed the seventh day and made it holy" (Bereishit/Genesis 2:3) giving us a sign for all time that it's good to rest one day out of every seven, emulating God.

Resting on the seventh day isn't just a commandment or a good idea (though it's both): Shabbat meets seven basic human needs we have i the modern world, and observing this weekly holiday makes our lives better.
