Today we are going to talk about Meta gaming you may have heard some people in you d and d group talk about it or heard about it online and just do not understand the meaning. Firstly to understand meta gaming you must understand that you as a player and your character know different things. For example you know what a TV your character in a medieval fantasy does not know what a TV is. My name is Kenny I am the player. My character is Albus Pendragon a wizard. One the other players is called tom and his character is Zylus the paladin.
If for example I wanted to poison Zylus and I go to a rouge NPC (non human player) and ask for poison to kill Zylus. Tom would know I wanted to kill his character but Zylus would not so Zylus could not say I am not drinking anything every again because he has no reason to think that.

Another example is If Zylus rolled a perception and saw 10 undead zombies coming towards us and I rolled and 1 and have dust in my eye Albus the character would not know 10 Undead zombies are coming his way, However the player Kenny – Me would. So if I got Albus to ready a dodge that would be meta gaming as I have no reason to dodge.

I will be doing another video explaining the difference between character and player.
Just remember you can’t act upon something if you character doesn’t know about it, whether it is for the good of the party or not.

Why is meta gaming a bad thing?

Meta gaming is not good for a d and d groups it blurs the lined between what is real and what is fantasy. It breaks the emerion and flow of the game and in my opinion should not be used. I feels as though your characters are not then in this world your just some people sitting around a table when you use meta gaming.

How do you get around meta gaming?

There are lots of ways around meta gaming such as, with the previous example of Albus rolling a poor perception. Zylus could call out and say there are 10 undead zombies coming are way get back. This way you are no meta gaming and helping your party out.
