Axe-Fx III vs Helix vs Quad Cortex vs MLC Subzero 100 - cab blocks compared

Описание к видео Axe-Fx III vs Helix vs Quad Cortex vs MLC Subzero 100 - cab blocks compared

I wanted to do such a video since Fractal Audio released its Dyna-Cabs : a comparison between the cab blocks of three different modelers, Axe-Fx III, Helix, Quad Cortex, in which you can freely chose your mics and position them, in front of the virtual speaker. As I just got the Bogren Digital MLC Subzero 100 plugin, which promise something unique in its cab block ("IRDX Technology"), I added this one too. I could have used Two Notes Wall of Sound too, maybe another time, to be honest I hate spending too much time on making videos, I'm no influencer ;)
At the end of the video, as a bonus and for reference, I also show some "traditional" static IRs : my own, the ones from the John Petrucci Tonemission pack, and three different Ownhammer packs.

Chapters :
0:00 Intro
0:16 Axe-Fx III Dyna-Cab (introduced with firmware 22.00)
3:30 no cab (yuk !)
3:40 Helix new cab block (introduced with fimware 3.50)
9:58 Quad Cortex cab block
15:28 MLC Subzero 100 cab block

The following parts are a bonus and here for reference.
These are "traditional" IRs in the Axe-Fx III cab block :

19:00 My go-to rhythm IR
19:14 John Petrucci Tonemission IRs
20:14 Ownhammer MOABI IRs
20:22 Ownhammer Rockbox V30EN
20:31 Ownhammer Modern Progressive
20:48 Some of my go-to IRs for high gain tones

I used a DI track reamped through the Axe-Fx III. Apologies for the stupid riff, this is the one I use when I want to tweak/update high gain rhythm presets in my modelers, it covers everything I need when tweaking a metal rhythm sound.

MY TWO CENTS
My favorite are my own IRs, of course. But I could definitely use any of these cab blocks. Here's some personal thoughts :
Axe-Fx III Dyna-Cab : my personal favorite, both for the sounds and the ergonomics (using Axe-Edit, as I always prefer to edit on a computer). I like that when changing a cab, the mic selection/position/distance stays the same. Also, you get 4 slots, and no matter how many slots you use, the volume stays constant ! That's something's that bugs me very much with Helix and Quad Cortex. What could make it better for me ? I'm a SM57+Royer 121 guy, but wouldn't mind a few more mics (Sennheiser MD 421, Beyerdynamic M 160) , and other cabs like ENGL. That would probably be for the next generation of Axe-Fx.
Line 6 Helix 3.50 cabs : I can definitely use them, but using HX edit, I find the responsiveness sluggish. But the most annoying thing for me is the volume management, I really wish there was a A/B mix or something (like in the MLC Subzero cab block). On the plus side : nice selection of cabs, and many microphones available - I don't like the R121 though, too boomy - yes, I know there's a HPF. And if you take your time, there's nice sounds here to be had, it just requires more patience (which I don't always have !)
Quad Cortex : lot of good things here, with a nice cab selection, plenty of mics etc. However, I will like it more when the Cortex Control will be released - it's personal, I don't like to have to use a touchscreen (and yes, I know the switches are rotary encoders too). It's great for a quick tweak on stage, but for long programming sessions, I prefer a computer editor. Also, regarding the level management, same remark that for the Helix, having a constant volume and a mix between the two slots would be much more convenient.
MLC Subzero 100 : Initially, I wanted to compare only the three hardware modelers above. But in the last minute (I had already started editing the video), I thought about adding this one, because it has just been released, with the promise of a "technological revolution" (which, honestly, I don't hear, maybe because I used a DI track instead of playing?). Well, it's a nice cab block, I like how the mix between the two cabs is implemented. Only two cabs are available though, so it's limited.

Fractal Audio users : I released a few presets using Dyna-Cabs, get them here :

***
Helix owners : I just released new stuff :

1) Two new amp packs :
https://fremenpresets.com/downloads/l...
https://fremenpresets.com/downloads/l...

2) Two single presets, with the PV Vitriol and the Grammatico GSG, on the Line 6 Marketplace (both for the Helix and the HX Stomp)

3) I also added a few bonus presets to some of my packs :
Helix : Big Pack ; Big Pack Add-On ; 2.30/2.50 pack ; Djent pack ; Classic Rock & Hard Rock
HX Stomp : Cleans ; Crunch & classic rock ; Djent ; Metal ; Rock
Most of the presets uses the new cabs introduced with firmware 3.50. Some use the Grammatico GSG and PV Vitriol amp models.
These bonus presets are not available yet on Marketplace but I'll send the updated packs to Line 6 soon.
