'Don't Paint Anywhere - Paint Somewhere.'
Bearing in mind the time and work involved to make this film, I intended for it to be available as a paid stream/download. On reflection, I have decided to make it freely accessible to anyone who wants to watch it - I think it contains an important message.
Over the years, all the greatest landscape painters have developed their skills and established their successful and uniquely recognisable work by forging an emotional connection with their subjects, spending time on location, observing, sketching and painting. There has been a simplicity in their approach to painting the landscape.
Today, the wonderful tradition of landscape painting is becoming over-complicated, increasingly hidden in a confusing maze of endless YT tutorials and expensive online teaching courses, with their eye-catching clickbait and unrealistic promises. Landscape painting is not a tutorial-reliant academic subject, but rather a means of personal expression that is, or should be, driven by inspiration, experience and creativity.
For anyone interested in becoming a landscape painter, or for landscape painters who are seeking to improve their skills, at some point there will need to be an engagement with their subject - the landscape. This video is a little bit different to much of the watercolour/landscape painting content on YouTube; it is a film designed to awaken your interest, or deepen your enthusiasm, for painting the landscape outdoors, not a paint-along exercise. Although I sketch and paint in three different locations at Chichester Harbour in Sussex, these are not designed to be tutorials, and my hope is that you will not want to copy what I'm doing, nor ask questions about equipment (which I have covered in other videos) but rather pick up your sketch pad and visit the landscapes that inspire you. Of course, not everyone is able to do so, and if that’s the case for you, think about revisiting those old photos and memories perhaps, instead of copying something that you have little connection to.
Ultimately, my message is that there is a simple approach to landscape painting - and where better to spend time than the landscape itself? For those that have not painted on location before, don't worry, it is not quite as daunting as you may envisage; in this film, I show you what is possible with just a sketchbook, a pencil, some watercolour paint and a little patience with the surroundings!
Why don't you have a go?
