You are light and everything you see down to the smallest atom in the universe is light, swirling and spiraling with energy.
Take a breath and let’s go back to ancient Vedic wisdom which is likely more than 10,000 years old.
According to ancient Yogic/Vedic/Hindu teachings, each of us has two opposing aspects in our being. In Sanskrit, the positive aspect of your being is the Purusha – the light self or the soul self. It is not a physical thing, it is light, the aspect of you that is eternal. In previous videos and meditations, we’ve been calling this our light, or our Light Consciousness. The Purusha exists in each of us and we can uncover this light. We all have this inner light – we are all beings of light.
Then there’s the negative aspect of our existence. In the Upanishads, it is called the Apanya, the animal instinct, the animal intelligence that connects you to the world. The Apanya consumes and digests, it protects you and provides for your needs. It’s the survival instinct that keeps you away from pain.
The Apanya exists to ensure your survival. It looks out on the world and categorizes, analyzes and compares everything against known threats of pain, or opportunities for pleasure.
The Purusha connects you to a higher plane of light, the Apanya connects you to the world. The Purusha is the highest form of your being – the light inside you, while the Apanya is the lowest form of your being – your animal instinct.
What guides this instinct, what guides the Apanya? If you think about this for a minute – your instincts at every moment are under the control of your Subconscious Mind. The Subconscious Mind is like a hand inside a puppet. Your body is the puppet – the flesh and bones. Whatever the Subconscious Mind wants, your body does.
How does your Subconscious Mind control you? The Apanya is that connection between mind and body. Working through the Apanya, your Subconscious creates electrical impulses up and down your spine, as well as chemical messages through your glandular system. It causes your muscles to contract and relax, can dilate your blood vessels to create complex emotions in your bloodstream. The Subconscious Mind, through the Apanya controls you physically and chemically.
Subconscious instinct instantly calculates and controls every muscle to speed up and jump just at the right time.
The Apanya is the will that gets you to the finish line, to find food, the will to survive and thrive.
At its best, the Apanya allows you to instinctively flow in the moment, but it can also block and restrict you if it believes you are in danger.
Imagine a very shy person walking into a party. The Subconscious will pull you back and working through the Apanya, your muscles will tense up and chemicals will be released into your bloodstream that make you nervous and afraid – even feeling sick. In other words, if you’re shy, then Mind – through the electrical and chemical impulses of the Apanya, creates the full experience of fear and limitation. It’s not imaginary – it is real. That is how strongly you are controlled by the beliefs in your Subconscious Mind.
Most of the time - you’re in front of a computer, or driving, or just sitting on a couch watching TV, so your Apanya is on low alert. But when something happens to you that is outside your daily comfort zone, your Apanya, your animal awareness takes over and controls your responses – keeps you safe.
As a baby and very young child you needed a survival mechanism to learn proper responses and create habits and routines to keep yourself safe, and to control your behavior to fit into the social norms.
But now, as an adulty, your Apanya is more of a hindrance than a help because the Apanya holds tightly to the beliefs, habits and feelings you created as a child because it is still taking instructions from the Subconscious Mind – which hasn’t changed since you were three years old. So when you try to change those routines or develop new beliefs, the Apanya pulls you back. When you’re shy and you try to start a conversation – the Apanya thinks you’re in danger and grips you to prevent you from speaking.
In this meditation I want to loosen the grip of your Apanya, and turn your awareness from your lower instincts and raise your awareness to your higher self – your light consciousness.
