১৮৮৬ সাল, দক্ষিণেশ্বর মন্দির, কলকাতা। একজন ফটোগ্রাফার মন্দিরে এসেছিলেন, শ্রী রামকৃষ্ণের একটি পোর্ট্রেট ছবি তুলতে, কারন রামকৃষ্ণ দেব তখন রোগশয্যায়, আর হয়তো বেশীদিন বাঁচবেন না তিনি, তাই নরেন্দ্রনাথ অর্থাৎ স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ কলকাতার এসপ্ল্যানেডের কাছে একটি স্টুডিওতে গিয়ে, ওনাদের অনুরোধ করেন যে, দক্ষিণেশ্বরে এসে শ্রী রামকৃষ্ণের একটি ছবি তুলতে। ছবি তো তোলা হল ঠিকঠাকই, কিন্তু স্টুডিওতে এনে ডেভেলপ করার সময়ই ঘটল এক অঘটন। ছবি তোলার কাঁচের নেগেটিভটি হাত থেকে পড়ে যাওয়ায় তার মধ্যে একটা ছোট আঁচড়ের দাগ হয়ে যায়। যার ফলে ডেভেলপ হওয়ার পর, ফাইনাল ফটোটিতে, শ্রী রামকৃষ্ণের মাথার পিছন দিকে তৈরী হয় একটি জ্যোতির্মন্ডল। স্টুডিওটি ছিল বোর্ন এন্ড শেফার্ড, যা ১৮৬৬ সালে, দুই মার্কিন ফটোগ্রাফার - স্যামুয়েল বোর্ন ও চার্লস শেফার্ড, কলকাতার সুরেন ব্যানার্জী স্ট্রিটে তৈরী করেন। স্টুডিওর ঠিকানা ছিল ১৪১, এস.এন ব্যানার্জী রোড, যেটি ছিল পৃথিবীর প্রথম ফটোগ্ৰাফি স্টুডিও। শুনলে অবাক হবেন যে, ১৯৫৫ সালে এই স্টুডিওর মালিক, টোয়েটীথ সেঞ্চুরি ফক্স - এর সাথে, যৌথভাবে, কলকাতার একটি সিনেমা হলের মালিকানা নেন। সিনেমা-হলটি ছিল 'এলীট সিনেমা-হল', যা ২০১৮ তে, আর শতাব্দী প্রাচীন এই বোর্ন এন্ড শেফার্ড ২০১৬ তে, চিরকালের মতো বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে।
1886, Dakshineswar Temple, Calcutta. A photographer came to the temple to take a portrait of Sri Ramakrishna, because Ramakrishna Dev was ill and might not live long, so Narendranath i.e. Swami Vivekananda went to a studio near the Esplanade in Calcutta, requesting them to come to Dakshineswar to take a picture of Sri Ramakrishna. The picture was taken well, but something went wrong while taking it to the studio for development. The photographic glass negative fell out of the hand, leaving a small scratch in it. As a result, after developing, in the final photo, a jyotirmandal is formed at the back of Sri Ramakrishna's head. The studio was Bourne & Shepherd, established in 1866 by two American photographers - Samuel Bourne and Charles Shepherd, in Suren Banerjee Street, Calcutta. The address of the studio was 141, SN Banerjee Road, which was the first photography studio in the world. You will be surprised to hear that in 1955, the owner of this studio, along with Twentieth Century Fox, jointly owned a cinema hall in Kolkata. The cinema was 'Elite Cinema', which closed forever in 2018, and the century-old Bourne & Shepherd in 2016.
However, this information is not clearly found as to who was the then owner of Bourne and Shepherd, the joint partner of Elite Cinema Hall! But if we calculate the period, it is found that in 1940, when Elite cinema was launched, Bourne & Shepherd was owned by Arthur Musselwhite.
