Scene 1: Dunsinane, a room in the castle
In this scene, a doctor and a gentlewoman observe Lady Macbeth sleepwalking and trying to wash imaginary bloodstains from her hands. Lady Macbeth's subconscious guilt and remorse are revealed as she mutters about the crimes she and Macbeth have committed. The doctor and gentlewoman discuss her troubled state and acknowledge that her condition requires more than medical intervention.
Scene 2: The country near Dunsinane
Malcolm, Macduff, and their army gather near Dunsinane to prepare for battle against Macbeth's forces. They discuss the tyrannical rule of Macbeth and express their determination to overthrow him. To conceal their numbers, each soldier is instructed to cut a branch from a tree in Birnam Wood and carry it as camouflage.
Scene 3: Dunsinane, a room in the castle
Macbeth receives the news of Lady Macbeth's death with indifference, showing his growing apathy towards life and the consequences of his actions. A messenger arrives to inform him about the approaching army, but Macbeth remains defiant and confident in his own abilities, refusing to surrender.
Scene 4: Country near Birnam Wood
Malcolm orders his soldiers to throw down their branches from Birnam Wood, revealing their true numbers and intention to attack. They beat the drums and march towards Dunsinane, creating the illusion that the forest itself is moving.
Scene 5: Dunsinane, within the castle
Aware of the approaching army, Macbeth prepares for battle, relying on the prophecies that have given him a false sense of invincibility. He receives reports of the enemy's strength but remains resolved to fight until the end, convinced that no man born of a woman can harm him.
Scene 6: Dunsinane, before the castle
Malcolm's army arrives at Dunsinane, and they begin their assault on the castle. They throw down their disguising branches and reveal their true force.
Scene 7: Another part of the field
During the battle, Macbeth encounters Young Siward, a nobleman's son, and they engage in combat. Macbeth kills Young Siward, showcasing his continued prowess in battle. Macduff, seeking revenge for the murder of his family, confronts Macbeth. Macbeth boasts about his invincibility, but Macduff reveals that he was "untimely ripped" from his mother's womb, fulfilling the prophecy. Macbeth realizes his impending doom but resolves to fight to the death.
Scene 8: Dunsinane, within the castle
The final showdown takes place between Macbeth and Macduff. Macbeth taunts Macduff, believing himself unbeatable as he was not "of woman born." However, Macduff reveals his birth by Caesarean section, proving him to be the exception. They engage in a fierce duel, and Macduff eventually kills Macbeth, fulfilling the prophecy and ending Macbeth's tyrannical rule.
Malcolm enters the castle as the victorious leader, accompanied by his loyal followers. He addresses the remaining Scottish nobles, praising their loyalty and promising to restore order and justice. With the death of Macbeth, rightful rule is reinstated.
